about

This recording is a culmination of many different musical experiences and influences in my life. When the idea for this recording first came into my head, I knew it had to be live. To me a live recording is the ultimate in honesty. I wanted the recording to be a true representation of where the group was at that moment in time. Many of my favorite recordings are live. There is a certain sound that a live Jazz recording captures that appeals to me so I decided to try and capture that same sound for this project.

Besides the saxophone, one of my favorite instruments is the Hammond Organ. I first heard the organ in a live setting in 1992 and since then I have been drawn to its vast colorful sound, looking for an opportunity to play in this setting. Besides just acting as comping instrument, the organ is also capable of acting like a full orchestra or big band. Many of my favorite organ players have played with some of my favorite saxophonists: Charles Earland/Houston Person, Shirley Scott/Stanley Turentine, Dr. Lonnie Smith/Maceo Parker, Jack McDuff/Gene Ammons.

I have always had a predisposition for listening to soulful music weather it be Cannonball Adderley, Johnny Hodges, and Willis Jackson, Booker Irvin or any other player that plays from the heart. Yes their technical ability on their instrument intrigues me, but it is their individuality and honesty that draws me to them. Roland Hanna once told me to “Write music that is you” and not to try to be something that I am not. He only had to tell me that once and since that time I have tried to write my music from my heart not from my mind. One Last Stop is my attempt at paying tribute to the great organ/saxophone bands not by trying to replicate their sounds or songs, but by being myself and allowing the musicians be creative within the context of my compositions.
